Abstract. One of the fundamental goals in ecology is to determine how movement behavior in natural landscapes affects the distribution and dynamics of populations. How biological organisms respond to edges between two different habitats may be a major determinant of overall movement behavior. In this paper, we study insect movement behavior using diffusion models with biased movement at patch boundaries. We obtain the probability density function that is discontinuous across the boundary where the bias occurs. Mean occupancy times for insects in different habitats are derived. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.
