I am interested in learning how adaptive behavior emerges from the interaction between the nervous, muscular, skeletal systems and the environment.
Crustaceans and other marine invertebrates perform interesting behaviors while having accessible nervous systems that allow us to address these issues. I am currently studying the changes that allow the spider crab (Libinia emarginata) to walk forwards. I compare Libinia's behavior and anatomy with sideways walking crabs (Carcinus) and forwards-walking crayfish (Procambarus) .
