Spring 2007

BIOL 7901, Section 3: The Theory and Applications of Evolutionary Biology

Course description:

The course focuses on the theory, methodology, and application of evolutionary biology. The seminar is reading-, writing-, and discussion-intensive. Readings (Mayr, E. 1997. This is Biology. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA) serve as the basis of class discussions. Additional readings from the primary literature and from news reports will be analyzed as to their actual and implied contents. No student presentations are required, but homework assignments are given and graded. The final grade will be based on the quality of participation in the class discussions and the homework assignments.

Interested graduate students should contact the instructor, preferably by e-mail and provide:

  • Their name and e-mail address
  • Their class and teaching schedules, so that a convenient time can be established for the seminar

Sample Syllabus

Courses Taught

BIOL 1002 (3 credit hours): General Biology (for non-majors)

  • Diversity, interactions, and life histories of microorganisms, fungi, plants, and animals.

BIOL 3152 (4 credit hours): Comparative Anatomy

  • Prereq. BIOL 2153, 2 hrs. lecture; 6 hrs. lab. An intensive course of (1) laboratory sessions concentrating on dissection techniques and vertebrate anatomy, and (2) lectures focusing on macroevolution, biomechanics, functional anatomy, and theoretical-ethical issues in combination with required readings of selected scientific articles and textbook materials. The course emphasizes interactive collaborative learning and integration of diverse aspects of biology.
