This site contains a variety of useful information that can
help you be successful in your academic program. This site contains the most
recent information on courses, course prerequisites, curriculum requirements and other
topics. This website is being continuously revised to provide
the most up to date and accurate information. The
website is here for your benefit, so please visit it
often.
Visit this website FIRST to answer questions you may have
regarding courses and degree programs offered by the Department of
Biological Sciences. Look at the website BEFORE you call or visit
the Office of Undergraduate Studies in 101 Life Sciences Building.
If you cannot find what you need on the website, call 578-5224 or
come to the office in 101 Life Sciences.

Listings |
The course listing (link below) contains the most recent, up to date,
information on all
undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Biological
Sciences. The course list contains course numbers, catalog
descriptions and course prerequisites. Please use this listing to
help you select courses.
IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE PAY PARTICULAR
ATTENTION TO COURSE PREREQUISITES. SOME COURSES ARE MONITORED BY THE
AUTOMATED PREREQUISITE CHECK SYSTEM. THIS MEANS THAT IF YOU DO NOT
HAVE THE PREREQUISITE(S) FOR A COURSE, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO
REGISTER FOR THAT COURSE. ALSO, NOTE THAT COURSE PREREQUISITES ARE
NOT INTENDED TO BE “ROADBLOCKS”, BUT ARE IN PLACE TO INDICATE THE
BACKGROUND REQUIRED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN A GIVEN COURSE. WE ALSO HOPE
THAT COURSE PREREQUISITES WILL HELP YOU SEE HOW VARIOUS COURSES ARE
RELATED TO EACH OTHER.

Research Opportunities |
The Department of
Biological Sciences at LSU offers well-rounded curricula designed to
lay a foundation for a future career in science. At LSU the
opportunity awaits for you to participate in cutting-edge research,
even as an undergraduate student. The department has over fifty
outstanding researchers who are often willing to take on
apprentices. One of these researchers may even be the instructor of
your first biology course, because the Department of Biological
Sciences prides itself in its faculty with dual teaching and
research roles.

| Academic
Advising |
| Academic advising is available in the Office of Undergraduate
Studies in 101 Life Sciences. Because of the large number of
students in the Department, the Office of Undergraduate Studies
cannot advise every student individually. This website can answer
many of your academic questions and can be used as an “Electronic
Advisor”. Also, there are four options available to get individual
advising:
1) Office of Undergraduate Studies in Biological
Sciences, 101 Life Sciences Building: Bring a current
degree audit to the advising session. You can obtain your degree
audit online through your PAWS account or you can request a copy
from the College of Basic Sciences in 338 Choppin Hall. To schedule
an advising session, call 578-5224 to make an appointment with Dr.
John Lynn.
2) Students in Research Labs: If you work in a
faculty member’s research laboratory, ask the faculty member if
he/she is willing to act as your academic advisor.
3) Students not in Research Labs: If you have a
favorite Biological Sciences professor, ask them if they would be
willing to act as your advisor.
4) College of Basic Sciences, 338 Choppin Hall:
Counselors in Basic Sciences can help you with meeting degree
requirements, residency requirements, graduation issues and keeping
your degree audit current and correct.

| Transfer
Credit
Evaluation |
| Evaluation of Biological Sciences courses from another university
for potential transfer credit to LSU can be done in the Office of
Undergraduate Studies, 101 Life Sciences Building. Students
participating in various exchange programs also need to have courses
evaluated for potential transfer credit BEFORE
they take courses at another institution. Transfer credit evaluation
for courses that are NOT Biological Sciences courses should be
evaluated by the appropriate department (e.g. English, Mathematics,
etc.). BEFORE making an appointment with Dr.
John Lynn or coming to the Office of Undergraduate Studies for
transfer credit evaluation, please locate and bring with you:
1) Catalog course description for each Biological Sciences course
you want evaluated. Catalog course descriptions can often be
downloaded from the Internet. In lieu of a course description, a
detailed syllabus that lists the specific topics, textbook, etc.
will suffice.
2) Proof that the course was completed satisfactorily. This can
be documented in different ways, including a transcript (unofficial
is OK), current degree audit, OR printout of
transfer credit from the LSU Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
To make an appointment for transfer credit evaluation, call
578-5224 or come by 101 Life Sciences Building.
