Prosanta Chakrabarty Lands Major Grant to Study Fish Family History

Prosanta Chakrabarty has been curator of ichthyology, or fishes, at the LSU Museum of Natural Sciences for a little more than one year, and he’s already landed two major catches: a large grant from the National Science Foundation, or NSF, and the discovery of two new species of fish found in Louisiana.

Department's 2009 Rainmakers recognized

LSU recently announced its second annual list of “Rainmakers,” those faculty members who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and creative scholarship, compete for external funding at the highest levels and attract and mentor exceptional graduate students. Eight faculty from the Department of Biological Sciences were recognized.

Two Department Students Named Goldwater Scholars
Two students in the Department of Biological Sciences have been awarded prestigious, nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarships by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

Brian Goh
Major(s): Biochemistry Career Goal: M.D./Ph.D. in Cell Biology. Conduct research in the application of tissue-specific adult stem cells as a method of cell therapeutics in regenerative medicine.

Nabil Thalji
Major(s): Biochemistry/Chemistry Career Goal: M.D./Ph.D. with Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Conduct research in bioorganic chemistry as a faculty member of a medical school.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Requirements for the scholarship include U.S. citizenship, being ranked in the top one-fourth of their class, institutional nomination and a planned career in science, math or engineering.
