A 5-day laboratory workshop on teaching modern Microbiology and Molecular Biology using hands-on exercises. Open to high school biology teachers. Will qualify teachers for the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Outreach Program (MMBOP)--which provides laboratory exercises, materials and equipment on a short-term loan basis.


The Workshop will be held in Room 536, Life Sciences Building, LSU, Baton Rouge.


Materials for the workshop will be provided. Housing (double-occupancy in a campus hotel) will be provided for participants residing outside the Baton Rouge commuting area. Participants will receive a stipend of $400 to help defray personal costs after successful completion of the workshop.

Plasmid DNA isolation and electrophoresis
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory
Food microbiology
     Fermentation of food products
     Yogurt/cheese production
Thursday
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of PCR products
Molecular biology outreach exercises:
     DNA transformation exercise
     DNA electrophoresis exercises
Microbiology: Testing of antimicrobial agents
Friday
Completion of outreach program exercises
Microbiology: composting/bioremediation
Discussion of workshop activities
Explanation of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Outreach Program (MMBOP)
