Use of condensed tannin containing forage, sericea lespedeza,
to reduce Haemonchus contortus infection in sheep
This study hopes to ascertain the effectiveness of condensed
tannins (CT) in L. cuneata hay as a means of reducing H.
contorus infection in sheep. Through the use of four treatment
groups, we aim to determine the effect of CT on existing infection,
newly acquired infection, as well as its effect on larval development
and survival in feces. Infection among sheep was monitored through
fecal egg counts (FEC) and anemia, as gauged by packed cell
volume (PCV). Results this far show that CT are highly effective
at reducing existing infection and significantly reduce acquired
infection.
