Synthesis of Chiral α, αAmino Acids and their incorporation into Model Hairpin Sequences
Chiral α, α-amino acids (ααAAs) are a key factor in the stabilization of α-strand conformations of peptides. It is possible that the R group of an amino acid may be able to further stabilize interactions in α-sheets. This is in part due to the close proximity of the side-chains to the amino acid residues. Also, the R groups on one strand could potentially interact with the R groups on the opposing strand, further stabilizing the conformation of the α-sheet. This added stabilization is accomplished through interactions in a pseudo diagonal interaction. In this study, chiral α,α-amino acids were synthesized, and upon future research will be incorporated into α-sheets.
