Promoter Methylation and Epigenetic Instability in Vulvar Lichen
Sclerosis and Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Methylation of CpG islands in the promoter region of tumor suppressor
genes is associated with gene inhibition. Alterations in 5-methyldeoxycytidine
patterns with increased methylation of the promoter regions
of p16 and other tumor suppressor genes were anticipated with
a progression to malignancy from normal tissue to lichen sclerosis
(LS) to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The purpose of this study
was to evaluate the relative frequency of epigenetic instability
as tissue progresses in carcinogenesis using methylation specific
PCR (MSP) techniques.
