John W. Wood (Vincent L. Wilson, LSU Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Environmental Studies) Aberrant Promoter Methylation and Epigenetic Instability in Vulvar Lichen Sclerosis and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Methylation of CpG islands in the promoter region of tumor suppressor genes is associated with gene inhibition. Alterations in 5-methyldeoxycytidine patterns with increased methylation of the promoter regions of p16 and other tumor suppressor genes were anticipated with a progression to malignancy from normal tissue to lichen sclerosis (LS) to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative frequency of epigenetic instability as tissue progresses in carcinogenesis using methylation specific PCR (MSP) techniques.
