The top diagram illustrates a more modern view of animal systematics than the scheme used in our text. The main differences are that the body cavity (coelom) is no longer used as a characteristic to define groups, and the protostomes are divided into two subgroups (Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa).

The second diagram illustrates chordate systematics, while the third illustrates vertebrates.
