Dr. Younathan has applied to NIH for renewed funding of his genetic and structural studies of hypoglycemic agents. He has proposed the synthesis of three fructose analogues that hold promise as hypoglycemic agents when administered orally. Since they lower the level of blood sugar independent of insulin action, if successful, the proposed analogues would eliminate the need for multiple daily insulin injection in the case of insulin-dependent diabetics. Drs. Younathan and Chang have also been successful in constructing and expressing a chimeric Bacillus/E.coli PFK and describing its kinetic characteristics.
