Avian Field Workers Needed


The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is accepting resumes to fill six seasonal wildlife technician positions for a Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) project (mist-netting and bird banding) at Sherburne Wildlife Management Area near Krotz Springs, Louisiana.  The project will be approximately 15 weeks long beginning in late April 2008 and ending in early August 2008.  Pay will be biweekly ($10.00 or more per hour depending on experience).  Technicians must provide their own field transportation, although mileage reimbursement will be available for travel to and from field sites.  LDWF will provide group housing (no pets) on Sherburne WMA, work shirts, and rubber boots.  Enthusiastic individuals with previous birding or field research experience are preferred.  Prior bird banding experience is preferred but not necessary.  LDWF biologists will provide an orientation for all technicians and will oversee day-to-day operations of the project.  Ideal candidates will have a working knowledge of MAPS protocols, strong southeastern bird ID skills (both by song/call and sight), songbird banding experience, knowledge of MAPSPROG, and Microsoft Office Suite.  Applicants should have a tolerance of long work days (10 hrs/day) that begin before dawn, be physically fit and be able to tolerate high heat and humidity, potential encounters with venomous snakes, definite encounters with biting insects as well as rough and muddy conditions.  Above all, applicants should have a positive attitude, good interpersonal skills, and a willingness to learn and be able to follow detailed instructions.  Interested applicants should submit a resume, a list of 3 references, a copy of his/her college transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable), and a LA Civil Service SF-10 form (see http://www.dscs.state.la.us/default.htm) directly to LDWF, Attn: Michael Seymour, Avian Biologist, Nongame Program, PO Box 98000, Baton Rouge LA 70898 or via email to mseymour@wlf.louisiana.gov.  Do not submit application packets to LA Civil Service!  For more information on the project contact Michael via email address above.  Resumes will be accepted until 15 February 2008.
