Welcome to the Department of Biological
Sciences graduate awards page.
A major function of the Department of Biological Sciences is the education of
graduate majors for a successful career in biology. We honor the best of our
students with a number of awards in order to assist them with costs of
preparation for their career.
Your tax deductible contribution to the following Awards will enhance the
Department’s ability to assist our graduate students in establishing
outstanding credentials for a career in the Biological Sciences.
Many of the past winners of our graduate awards have established successful
professional careers after graduate school. Although we do not have a complete
list of award winners, we invite previous awardees to provide a thumbnail
sketch of current activities by sending us information on your accomplishments.

Awards for Excellence in
Teaching
William H. Gates Award for Excellence in
Freshman Instruction - Given annually to a teaching assistant for outstanding
instruction in freshman biology laboratories for majors. (award
winners)
Freshman Biology Non-majors Teaching Assistant Award - Given
annually to a teaching assistant in the biological sciences for outstanding
instruction in freshman biology laboratories for non-majors. (award
winners)
Daisy B. and William J. Luke Botany Teaching Assistant Award -
Given annually to a teaching assistant in the plant biology program for
outstanding instruction. (award winners)
Simon Chang / Ezzat Younathan Outstanding Biochemistry Teaching Assistant
Award - Given annually to a teaching assistant in the biochemistry
program for outstanding instruction (award winners)
Awards for Excellence in Research
Robert Scott and Louise Pierce Allen Scholarship for Biochemistry
-Given Annually to a biochemistry graduate student for significant achievements
in research. (award winners)
C. W. Edgerton Honor Award - Given annually to a plant biology
graduate student for significant achievements in research. (award
winners)
T. Vinton Holmes Award - Given annually to support student
research in the field of ornithology. The Holmes Award is a research grant
rather than an achievement award. (award winners)
Carrie Lynn Yoder Memorial Fellowship - (award winners)
Award for Travel to Professional Meetings
McDaniel Travel Award - Given semi-annually to fund travel
expenses for graduate students to travel to national or international meetings
in the Biological Sciences and present a paper or poster on the students
graduate research. (award winners)
